Polystyrene; noise, water, electrical and thermal insulator!
Plastofoam in Iran is known as UNOLIT and its main name is Polystyrene which is a
white material and is moisture and noise insulator. It was first used by Germans during World War II
to make floating bridges on the water.
Plasotfoam is a petrochemical product made of small prisms and expands under pressure and
water steam. Because of its chemical and physical structure, plastofoam resists against water
and bacteria very significantly. Plastofoam comes with various applications.
A sort of Plastofoam is known as Expandable Poly Styrene (EPS) and is used in packaging,
insulating, education, advertising, . . . it is found in the market in the different shapes
i.e. sheets, slabs, granules, in various thickness. It is normally cut with hot wire machines
into different shapes.
Plastofoam slabs have been widely used by mass constructors in construction industry
(mainly in high rising buildings) in Tehran because of their light weight and low cost.
Comparing cement blocks which weight 15 Kg per each block, the weight of Plastofoam slabs
is ignorable, so, it reduces the weights of the whole building.
Being noise and termal insulator and their resistance against earth quakes are
the other considerable advantages of Plastofoam which increases it consumption in construction industry.
